Many people start the year off with a word of the year or a list of things they hope to accomplish. While I’ve been known to do both of things, this year I thought I would take an extra step and pick a few guiding lights to get me though 2019. With all of the media we are constantly consuming, messages can get lost and information can becoming overwhelming. So when I’m not in the mood to open an app and hear from the entire world, I’m going to tune it out and listen to these five spirit guides.
1. Michelle Obama
Michelle Obama knows how to create a successful life. She’s managed to have a thriving career and a loving marriage while being a hands-on mother, a thoughtful daughter, and a fierce friend. Michelle Obama’s life is a perfect example of the closest we can get to having it all and looking great while doing it. When I need motivation this year, I will pick up ‘Becoming‘ again or listen to one of Michelle’s inspiring speeches.
Oprah is the ultimate spirit guide. She’s motivation incarnate. Oprah knows how to take nothing and turn it into everything. People often (correctly) refer to her as the “Queen of All Media” and she’s often ranked as one of the most influential people in the world. Her net worth of 2.6 billion actually dulls in comparison to her kindness, generosity, honesty, and work ethic. One of the things I’ve always loved most about Oprah is that she defines success for herself and never gives into society’s idea of what she needs to do to be successful (ie. get married and have several children). When I need to be inspired to walk my own path, I’ll tune into Super Soul Sunday or pick up the latest issue of Oprah Magazine.
3. Meghan, Duchess of Sussex
If you follow me on instagram than there is a good chance you’ve heard me talk about my love for Meghan Markle before. Being mixed race myself, I’m automatically drawn to Meghan and proud of all that she has accomplished so far. In addition to being an actor and a style icon, Meghan is also an outspoken feminist and a humanitarian. When I’m trying to emit that “Markle Sparkle” I’ll check out old posts from The Tig or pour over my friend’s Morgan’s pinterest account.
Lizzo makes me feel GOOD AS HELL. She’s always in such a happy mood and is constantly spreading joy. Whether she’s creating bops to shake your bum to, shaking her bum, or modeling in huge campaigns, she’s always cool, confident, and completely gorgeous. Lizzo is incredibly talented and stunningly beautiful yet she doesn’t seem to take herself to seriously. When I want to feel fun, funny, and fierce I’ll blast ‘Juice‘ while backing that ass up.
Jonathan Van Ness is living his best life! Many people have fallen in love with Jonathan thanks to Gay of Thrones and Queer Eye. These shows introduced Jonathan to us as a hairstylist to the stars but this multitalented queen has more going on than anyone could have guessed! From red carpets to tv shows to award winning podcasts to a comedy tour to being an ice skating queen, Jonathan is doing it all! I love that JVN is constantly encouraging fans and sharing inspiration and kindness. It’s a perfect example of how to use your platform to make the world a better place. When I’m trying to earn my crown as a confidence and kindness queen I’m going to watch Queer Eye and tune into Jonathan’s insta stories.
