Last year I started a self-love portrait series that was very short lived. I decided to start the portrait series while my grandfather was sick and he died shortly after. It took a pretty large toll on me and I found myself too depressed and unmotivated creatively to continue the series. After some much needed rest, I feel creatively ready to tackle this series again.
I decided to start out with a portrait of myself rocking red lips. Women of color are so often told that we are supposed to limit ourselves to certain reds because of our darken skin. After meeting the amazing and talented, Jacob Tobia, I was inspired to wear the brightest red my heart desires. I don’t wear make up often but when I do, I shouldn’t be restricted by silly rules. Everyone should feel free to express themselves in whatever way makes them feel beautiful and happy.
If you would like to join me in my quest to use self-portraits to exercise and celebrate self-love, post your own self portrait on Saturday and use the hashtag #CharismaticSelfLove.
