6. Forgive Yourself.
For many people forgiveness is hard but for most people, it’s harder to forgive themself than it is to forgive others. Forgiving yourself for mistakes that you have made in your past isn’t just helpful; it is completely necessary.
Living life in the present and accepting and loving who you are today means letting go of the past. To truly let go of the past, you have to make peace with it.
Sometimes it is harder to forgive ourselves because we actually had control over the mistakes we have made. Sometimes it is just harder to forget a mistake that we make because it is harder to forget it. Changing the course of one’s future through a mistake is especially hard because we always wonder what could have been.
Regardless of what mistake you made, it is not possible to go back in time and stop yourself from making it. You are human and you are far from perfect. The great news is that we all are far from perfect and there is always a way to make a situation better.
If you hurt someone, do something kind for them. If you negatively impacted your future, make some positive changes. If the situation was so long ago that you don’t think you can do anything to change it, yet it is still bothering you, go do something great to put more positive energy into the world. You can volunteer, participate in a random act of kindness, or simply spend a day giving out compliments to people who pass by.
Once you have done what you can to make the situation better, it is time to move on. Accept that you are not perfect and you will make mistakes in life. Forgive yourself for anything you have done in the past and move on with a clean slate. You simply can’t have self love without self acceptance. Focus on what you can do to be the best version of yourself today and keep moving forward.
